In collaboration with Indovoiceover Academy, Sub-directorate Alumni Relations hosted a collaborative workshop entitled “Voice Over and Voice Acting”. This event was held on Friday (11/19) through the Zoom Meeting Room. Approximately 30 participants attended the event.
Syarif Acil, the representative of Indovoiceover Academy, kicked off the webinar by briefly explaining voice over and voice acting. Although it looks similar, they differ in the purpose. Voice over is used to fill in the content. In contrast, voice acting is often used by theatre activists and to deliver the message in the story to the audience.
Nowadays, Syarif said that voice over is a profession. Moreover, in the future, where all technology and communication will be increasingly developed, this profession will be promising and widely used, especially in advertising. Moreover, many startup companies are looking for VO (voice over) talent for background sound for company profile videos and product videos.
Not only explaining the opportunity in VO career, the speakers also trained the participants how to do voice acting well. The participants volunteered to try voice acting by reading the dialogues. After that, the speakers gave feedback and provided them with tips and tricks in training the voice.
We need to breathe using the diaphragm in voice acting, which is breath taken from the mouth and stomach. It requires a regular exercise. Then, we need to read a lot using expressions or emotions. Once you’re confident, record your voice occasionally and ask your partner to evaluate.
“There’s been a lot of literature on voice over, therefore everyone can learn,” he concluded.
He then advised those who are interested in this profession not to be afraid and keep practising. Keep increasing the sound sample to receive feedback and a way to improve the quality. There are also many types of voice over and voice acting. Syarif explained that some can imitate more than two voices. Nevertheless, it all depends on the ability of each individual.
“Whenever you want to send a sample (VO voice), always use a proper tool. A proper tool will help you a lot for clear intonation and articulation, which is important in VO,” said Syarif.
He also stated that being a VO means preparing ourselves for income fluctuation. It is one of the consequences though we know there are many opportunities as VO out there. It really depends on the project offered. No need to worry. Once we succeed in one project, more projects will come.
Through this workshop, it is hoped that participants interested in the world of voice over and voice acting will gain insight to find opportunities in the industrial world. In addition, they can train themselves based on the tips spilled by the speaker.
