“No need to worry in working for the good. Enjoy the process!” said Hikmat Hardono, Chairman of Indonesia Mengajar Foundation in Non-Profit Organizations Talks: Choose a Chance to Make Change on Wednesday (12/04) at Grha Sabha Pramana Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). The talk show that was moderated by Challida Hikmarani, M.A., Head of Career Development Unit of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM was one of a series of UGM Integrated Career Days 2017 event organized by Sub-directorate of Alumni Relations UGM.
Not only Hikmat Hardono, the talk show also featured Rystiana Putranti from World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia and Suharti, Director of Rifka Annisa; an organization that focuses on providing support for women that are victims of violence. “The environmental advocacy program must synergize with government regulations to benefit the community, government, and organizations,” Rystiana said while providing an overview of biodiversity and nature’s balance.
“In building a career in a non-profit organization, there are many challenges to go through such as having to explore for innovations and building a strong network,” said Suharti explaining about the career challenges of non-government organizations. “One other thing to note is, there are still very few female researchers. This is a career opportunity that should be considered,” Suharti mentioned.
Continuing what Suharti says, Hikmat explained some of the advantages of joining a non-governmental organization. “NGOs are not just about serving and serving. In exploring by dedicating yourself to the community, we can learn and always learn to become a better person,” said Hikmat.
“Look around! Be aware of your environment and sharpen your social skills by adapting to it, ” Hikmat’s advice to more than 200 participants of the two-hour talk show. In line with Hikmat, the two other speakers agreed that building a social life was the key to a successful career in non-governmental organizations.
