The community of Orchid lovers, KAGAMA Orchids, held “Training, Introduction, Treatment, and Cultivation of Orchid Plant” at UGM Central Building, Saturday (17/2).
In the event that had 50 participants involved, also held the planting of hundreds of Orchid Species in the campus of Universitas Gadjah Mada. A number of large trees on the south courtyard of UGM Central Building and on the Office of Alumni Relations in Bulaksumur Housing Block D5 were chosen to be the locations of planting.
“We planted no less than 256 orchids of various species in UGM in order to contribute to the beauty of the campus, while preserving the wealth of natural resources of Indonesia,” said the chairman of the event, Retno Dwiarsi when giving a speech in front of participants and the Director of Partnership, Alumni, and International Affairs Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, S.Si., M.Sc. who was also present.
According to Retno, these orchids they all planted were specially selected with superior characteristics and in accordance with the climate situation in Yogyakarta. The orchids are obtained from the donation of KAGAMA Orchids members who are participants in this activity.
“We carry various Orchid species such as Ascocentrum, Cymbidium sp., Coelogyne sp., Dendrobium sp., Grammatophyllum sp., Rhynchostylis, and Vanda sp.,” Retno added.
Before planting, the participants were given a lecture about Orchid by Dedek S. Santosa in Multimedia Room of UGM Central Building. The presence of the Flower Entrepreneur from Malang was greeted enthusiastically by the participants to discuss and share experiences in caring for orchids.
According to him, Orchid plants rely heavily on the agroclimatology condition. Therefore, the kinds and species that will be planted should be in accordance with the climatic conditions at the planting site.
“Proper care is also needed to make Orchid grow well and able to bloom throughout the year as expected,” said Dedek. [Eggy]
