Budi Utomo is an alumnus from Faculty of Social and Political Sciences majoring in Communication Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta (UGM) who graduated in 1997. He is a lecturer at AKINDO and Institut of Indonesian Language Education in Turi, Sleman. Budi often invited his students which dominantly foreigners to interact and participate in community activities in his village, Brayut village. In 1999 Budi Utomo established the Ani-ani Foundation in his residence with the aim of developing alternative tourism for foreigners. The idea was developed by Budi by presenting the concept of nature and beauty of Javanese culture in the Brayut Tourism Village. There are a lot of tour packages are designed so that visitors can enjoy rural life and increasingly fond of local culture.
Due to the high dedication in developing villages potential especially in Brayut village, Budi Utomo has succeeded in becoming a pioneer in the emergence of tourism villages in DIY, which until now the numbers continue to grow. Budi continues to build and develop Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the form of women’s jewelry and accessories crafts in Brayut village. Budi is also the owner of Ani-Ani Jewelry & Craft, Wulu Merak Exclusive Jewelry, and Nara Productions. Budi helped the villagers through this business because he was able to empower 30 employees and reduce the unemployment number in the village where he lived. Budi Utomo continued to make achievements and in 2001 Budi succeeded in winning 1st place for the Pioneer Youth Election in Tourism and Cultural Arts at Sleman Regency, DIY. In the same year, Budi again won 1st place at the Pioneer Provincial Youth in Tourism and Cultural Arts. Then in 2002, he was awarded the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in DIY. For his achievements and contributions as UGM alumni in developing and empowering villages, Budi Utomo won the 2018 Alumni Awards in the Entrepreneurship Pioneer category.
