The Sub Directorate of Alumni Relations at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) in collaboration with Go Global Indonesia held a career workshop titled “How to Start a Successful Career with Global Competence”? which was held in Multimedia Room 2, UGM Central Building on the 3rd floor, on Wednesday (11/9).
This event is intended for students and alumni to be able to prepare themselves for the world of work in the middle of the millennial era now and in the future. Fonnyta Amran, Country Manager of Go Global Indonesia, was present as a joint speaker with Andries Sibarani, Executive Center for Global Leadership, and Utomo as Program Coordinator.
Tomo opened the material by presenting the state of the world in this era which featured industrial revolution 4.0 which would eliminate many tasks by humans and are replaced by robots or automatic machines. Therefore, it is important for young people to become globally competent to keep up with the ongoing industrial revolution.
“Millennials now work not solely for salary. But also looking for work that has a purpose going forward, “he said.
The world will continue to change and Tomo added that millennials must continue to equip themselves to become globally competent individuals. Both technological and communication innovations continue to develop so as to indirectly shape the mind to continue looking for and create something new. The millennial era is also more concentrated on useful work especially on the environment and its ecosystem.
After the presentation on the current situation of the work world, the event continued with discussion between participants and speakers. The topic of future concerns for both final year students and fresh graduates is a trigger for a deeper discussion of global competence.
Fonnyta added that there are differences between past and present generations in responding to future plans. Today’s generation in planning for the future must have broader knowledge and be brave to keep on changing because, in the future, human power has slowly begun to be replaced. Many industries use automatic machines in the future because they are considered to have less risk and can reduce costs.
Not only armed with knowledge, the millennial must also be concerned about the needs of the surroundings. Working in the future does not only sit behind the desk but also works directly to create change in the field. In order to create a useful innovation, environmental awareness and concern for life around must continue to be grown. Therefore, the younger generation, especially UGM graduates, must equip themselves to continue to see global changes and continue to be creative in order to continue to survive in global competition.
