In collaboration with PT Barata Indonesia (Persero), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) through the Directorate of Partnerships, Alumni, and Global Initiatives hosted a career webinar entitled “How To Be Attractive Job Seeker”. This event was held on Wednesday (29/7) via Cisco Webex Meeting. It featured Bagus Tri Ardiyanto, S.H., HR & GA Manager Power Plant Division PT Barata Indonesia (Persero). Approximately 300 participants attended the webinar.
PT Barata Indonesia (Persero) is a state-owned company incorporated in the manufacturing industry. The company is engaged in EPC, construction, and manufacturing.
Bagus elaborated six points on how to be a job seeker. They are passion, personal branding, positive social media, CV, presentation and interview, and soft effort.
“First, we need to define our desires and goals. Ask yourself what our interests are,” he said.
He said that the ideal job seeker can identify interests and targets. After that, don’t be influenced by other people and follow the original goal. On top of that, mentors are also important to be role models.
“Mentor is not only limited to people we meet directly but also people who influence us,” he added.
Next, he also stated ten abilities to hone. They are complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, people management, collaboration, emotional intelligence, decision making, service-oriented, negotiation, and cognitive flexibility.
“Next is personal branding. Personal branding is telling people who we are. It includes what people say about us,” said Bagus.
Companies also look at applicants’ social media to track the way they use social media. Even SOEs have started to encourage companies to track the applicant’s records.
“In social media, it is better to use real name account, post positive content that has been verified, join good communities, and update the profile periodically,” explained Bagus.
Another key point is a CV or Curriculum Vitae. Its content must be concise and straightforward such as self-description, contacts, work experience or organizational experience, training or certification, and a portfolio related to soft or hard skills. Again, using an existing template will help make your CV more structured.
The next steps are presentation and interview. He conveyed the key to the presentation is animation, keywords, fonts type and colors, presentation background, typos, and graphics (if available) so that the reader will not be bored. On top of that, honesty, confidence, and also gestures will catch the recruiter’s attention. Meanwhile, in the interview, the key is to understand and be prepared with all questions.
“We need to be able to measure ourselves. For instance, what should we do to overcome our weakness,” he said.
Last but not least is soft effort.
“Pray and ask for support from parents. Then, keep thinking that miracle will come,” concluded Bagus.
This webinar is expected to provide participants with a myriad of knowledge. Bagus explained the material based on what HR often encounters in state-owned companies in particular and, hopefully, could be an illustration for participants in applying for jobs.
