UGM Career Virtual Fair 2020 returned on Tuesday (20/10). UGM VCF is a virtual career fair that has been periodically held since September. The Secretary of Directorate of Partnership, Alumni, and Global Initiatives UGM, Dr. Puji Astuti, S.Si., M.Sc. Apt., inaugurated the event. In her opening remarks, she stated that the event is a synergy between students, alumni, and various stakeholders in increasing the employability of university graduates.
“The event is one of Universitas Gadjah Mada’s curriculum development strategies, which is established so the university curriculum can always be adjusted to what is needed by corporate partners,” concluded Dr. Puji.
Dr. Puji also wished that students and alumni could gain knowledge about work environment from corporate partners participating in the UGM VCF, and then implement what they have learned. She added that students should be brave to ask questions and take full advantage of this opportunity to not be left behind. Together with corporate partners, they were expected to contribute to national development.
The first day commenced with a webinar from Lenovo Indonesia. The webinar entitled “How Artificial Intelligence (AI) will Change the Future” was delivered by Mr. Khoo Hong Chuan, Director of Education Transform and Development of Lenovo Central Asia Pacific, and Benny Kusuma, Education Lead of Microsoft Indonesia. This webinar explained how AI works and how it is needed in the current digital era. In addition to making life easier, AI is also a useful technology, especially during a pandemic where all physical activities are limited, and we rely a lot on gadgets to fulfill our needs.
Next in line was Yogyakarta Administrative Region Office of Manpower and Transmigration. The DIY Manpower and Transmigration Office explained the urgency of the Job Creation Law and how its dynamics relate to changes in the global economy and workers’ life. They also allowed all participants to ask questions, either through the Zoom and Youtube comment sections or all their social media.
The next speaker represented Deepublish Publisher, a book publisher and distributor. Deepublish wants to position itself as a religiously innovative company that educates, succeeds, and elevates humanity. Departing from this vision, Deepublish assists academics in supplying teaching materials. The publisher also opens employment opportunities for all majors to occupy several positions.
The Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) closed the first day of UGM VCF 2020. Through its presentation, AAS explained the levels of education covered by the scholarship and how to register for the selection process. In addition, the experience from scholarship recipients also helped illustrate the opportunities obtained if participants become AAS recipients.
UGM VCF 2020 provided a lot of information regarding the needs and skills sought by companies in general. Therefore, the participants are expected to prepare themselves as early as possible by enriching themselves with knowledge and soft skills and taking as many lessons as possible from partners’ presentations. Job vacancies offered were also open to every participant who wants to register and were not limited to specific majors or universities. UGM VCF was expected to accommodate students and alumni to find employment after graduating from university
