Universitas Gadjah Mada, through the Directorate of Partnerships, Alumni, and Global Initiatives, hosted a career seminar, “Storytelling in the Digital Era” on Tuesday (12/07). This event was conducted in a hybrid method at Multimedia Room, Gedung Pusat UGM and Zoom Meeting Room. This event featured Hari A. Kurniawan, or Om Hao, Head of R&D MD Entertainment, and a talent of the story of Tanah Jawa channel. Approximately 37 participants attended offline, and 57 participants attended online.
The event commenced with a speech by the Head Chief of Sub-directorate of Alumni Relations, Dr. Sulistyowati, S.S., M. Hum. She hoped participants could learn much, particularly about storytelling, using social media platforms like Om Hao did.
“Hopefully, participants can gain a lot from this event. Then, it is hoped that Om Hao could share his strategies to achieve his position, “he said.
The digital era has become a new field to find or create new jobs. One of which is a content creator. However, because it is digital, Om Hao said, you must first understand the demands and the rules, including a storyteller.
“First thing first, you need to be a content creator. Then, you have to collect the ideas and data, and then research to create the concept,” he said.
Then, you have to understand three points; content: the skills to create stories, text: the writing skills, and presentation: public speaking.
He also explained four types of content. They are educational content, traveling content, entertainment content, and relaxing content. Viewers usually prefer entertaining content such as entertainment content and relaxing content.
“Once you are determined to be a content creator, then you need to decide the means (the media),” he continued.
The next step is the content presentation flow. He also mentioned the process, which took a while.
“First, you have to prepare for R&D first, then field surveys and meetings with the creative team to determine the type of content. Then field execution. After that, editing and quality control. Finally, uploading and evaluating,” he explained.
The key to being a storyteller, said Om Hao, is to be sensitive to what is being viral or seen by many people. We must be able to guess. Therefore, research is a must.
“We must be smart and excel on social media if we are a content creator,” he added.
This event invited the participants to use social media as a creative medium or a means to learn. By knowing the opportunities in the digital world, it is hoped that through this career seminar, the participants could try to be creative or innovate in the world of digital creation.
