To support sustainable agriculture and enhance the availability of diverse food sources, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has partnered with KAGAMA East Kalimantan and the KAGAMA Community Service Task Force (KAKN) to promote and plant “Melona” melon seeds in Samboja District, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan on Friday (21/6).

The “Melona” melon cultivar is the outcome of research and development by the Genetics and Breeding Laboratory at UGM’s Faculty of Biology. It is a derivative of the “Luna” melon cultivar, known for its commercial excellence. This new cultivar aims to enhance food diversity and crop variety.

The event was also attended by representatives from OIKN, who will assist in planting “Melona” seeds in local greenhouses in Sepaku, Penajam Paser Utara. This initiative demonstrates UGM’s commitment to translating its research into practical solutions that boost farmers’ incomes, particularly in melon cultivation.

“We hope this collaboration will promote a more sustainable agricultural system, increase the availability of diverse food sources, and make use of genetically modified plant diversity,” said Lalu F. Idhi, Chair of KAGAMA East Kalimantan.

The outreach and planting of “Melona” melons in East Kalimantan are expected to positively impact farmers’ incomes and contribute to food security in the region.
